Meet Maria Leonard Olsen, the author

Why I wrote this book:

As a gift to myself for my 50th birthday, I tried 50 new things to determine how I want to live the next chapter.

I had just gotten divorced and sober, became an empty nester and was living alone for the first time in my life. Trying 50 new things — including travel, adventure, social activities, learning/teaching, spiritual endeavors, physical challenges and lifestyle changes — elevated my life out of a deep hole of despair and provided a roadmap for thousands of people to uplevel their lives.

Applause! Applause!

Talk a Little, Talk a Lot

All great reads, like this one, have themes or ideas, or just hints, for discussion topics in your book club. Here are a few ideas for you:

Do you believe in bucket lists? A. At midlife, I am acutely aware that I have lived more of my life than I have ahead of me. So I have become intentional about how I spend my time and with whom I spend it. After reading 50 After 50, have you decided to make any changes in your life?
What do you want to do before you die? A. I keep a list on my phone of all the places I want to go and things I want to do. I take every opportunity to do the things on that list. We all have lost people in our lives and know that the time we have left is not predictable. Have memories, not regrets. Your life is happening right now; it’s up to you what you do with it.
What do you want your legacy to be? A. We all have the ability to bloom where we are planted. Legacy does not have to be a grand, public gesture. It can be making those you care about know they are loved.
